Group Fitness Periodization

Precision Athletics Vancouver is continually striving to improve our class offerings and format. This time our goal was to make the classes more challenging,  get you results faster and improve the transferability between programs.

The Big Change: Periodization

First off, we’ve improved the class structure by getting all our classes (Crosstraining and Fitness, Boot Camp, Sport Conditioning and Core Circuit) on a set ‘periodization‘. Periodization is a type of training used by coaches, trainers and athletes that breaks up a program into specific time-based segments. The program is focussed on one or two areas of fitness versus providing general overall fitness.

We have divided all our group fitness classes into three phases (see below) which will be trained for one week each. Since there are four weeks in a month, each month will have an extra focus on one of the phases.

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3
Areas focused on Muscular Endurance Strength Power
Aerobic Conditioning Core Strength Anaerobic
Body Weight Mobility

So if you know you’re going to miss your morning Boot Camp class, you can sign up for a noon Crosstraining class instead and be confident that the workout will be similar – because the programming will be based on the same theme or periodization.

We have also built in monthly challenges that will reflect the week’s theme. These will help to keep you motivated and to track your progress.

What’s in Store for August

Our focus in August is on:

  • Power
  • Core Explosiveness
  • Anaerobic Conditioning

Our challenge will be 3 minutes of Wall balls for max reps. The wall ball throwss can be modified to your current ability level. However, if you attend our classes and follow the program we guarantee you will see an improvement by the end of the month.

The extra focus (the 1st and 4th week of the month) will be on Phase 3.

What Does This All Mean?

As a group fitness client you’ll experience better results and more consistency between classes. If you cannot attend your usual class one week, the other classes in that same week will offer a similar theme, i.e. higher reps and more cardio, or lower reps and more core work. The monthly challenges will make it much easier to gauge your progress and increase your motivation.
