Experience

Looking for a way to help people, Matsuo traded the lab coat for a personal training certification in 2010. He has worked with a wide range of populations including cardiac rehab patients, youth at risk as well as elite level powerlifting athletes. 

After experimenting with conditioning training in martial arts (he holds a black belt in tae kwon do and a brown belt in Shotokan karate) and endurance training in marathon running (he completed 3 marathons in 2008 – 2009), in late 2015, Matsuo started coaching powerlifting as he became more focused on strength training. Coaching athletes in the junior and masters 3 and 4 (over 60 years old) categories has shifted his interest from general fitness to how developing and keeping strength at any age impacts overall physical and mental health.  

Because of his educational background, he approaches programming from a scientific perspective, but also recognizes the art that influences the craft. Every person is different and every person’s lifts behave differently according to age and stimuli response. He has used this approach to produce 2 powerlifting Team Canada members (one of them holds the national deadlift record for the age/weight class). He is very grateful to have been fortunate to work with these athletes.

Interests

A geek at heart, Matsuo likes to listen to podcasts on the latest strength and conditioning and performance research as well deep diving into scientific papers (he’ll ask to cite your sources if you bring something up). If he is not at the gym, he’s looking for something to eat or watching film noir movies or anime.
